Wellington Radio Flyers was formed in
the seventies by a group of modellers who specialised in the building and
flying of radio controlled model aircraft. It has continued to this day with
this same basic concept in place.
Our flying site
in the southern Wairarapa is ideal for those who
prefer the wide open spaces. With a 1500 foot ceiling it is ideal for both
large power models and gliders. Tutoring is available from beginners to Wings
Badge stage.
There are 23 members
in the club and between them they have expertise and equipment that covers most
of the special requirements of the hobby so they are able to provide advice and
mutual support to other members.
Within the
overall objective of radio control, there are many types of models flown by club
members.
The most
popular type of model would be the trainer/sport/large model powered by a glow
plug engine. This suits the modeller, whose satisfaction of the hobby comes
from building, trimming and successfully flying their models. It is a most
satisfying experience when you first bring a model to the stage that you can
take off, fly a circuit and land back on the strip.
Also within the
club are gliders, scale and aerobatic pattern models. Pattern ships are
designed for competition where a manoeuvre schedule is performed against fellow
competitors.
For those who
do not wish to build models, there are ARTF (almost ready to fly) models
available which can get you ready to fly after just a few hours assembly.
Electric
powered models have become very popular. Mainly due to the fact that technical
development have brought them to the stage where they can perform as well as
their glow engine counterparts. They have the advantage of being quiet enough
to fly in suitable public places and small enough to fly indoors. Because of
this they are often referred to as ‘park’ and ‘indoor’ flyers.
Several members
are flying with these models.
